Are there any special rules to be respected in that field, or are there only habits ? How can one introduce a new Kyriale in a parish ? Those are frequently asked questions that are worth an answer. At the beginning of each kyriale, the Liber usualis of the Solesmes editions indicates its use. These indications correspond to the cataloguing of the feasts according to the liturgical standards up to 1962. However, the Congregation of the Rites has no fixed rule in the matter, other than the use of masses XV to XVIII for the week days. There are no absolute rules, only habits. There are good habits : usage of kyriale I for the Easter cycle or of kyriale XVII for the Advent and Lent. There are also bad habits, such as the excessive use of kyriale VIII or of the du Mont masses, to such a point that in some parishes, none others are known ; this is in no way Catholic – that is universal. With such examples, who can be surprised at the speed of the liturgical reform ? For the rest, the principle variatio delectat applies ; the change is pleasant inasmuch as it expresses each time the same things under various musical modes. Kyriale IV is ot the only one applicable for the second class feasts. Kyriale XIII will gain to be known instead of kyriale V and kyriale X just as much as kyriale IX. However, there is no fixed rule, except that the kyriale ought to be sung at sung masses and that a healthy diversity encourages the Church’s love for prayer. One question stands out : how can a new kyriale by introduced without discouraging the congregation, nor meeting possible opposition ? Obviously, no one can make the parishioners sing a kyriale they do not know ; it would be unfair to make such an attempt. On the other hand, it is incumbent to Gregorian school to learn the totality of a new kyriale, and to sing it entirely several Sundays in succession. After the parishioners have heard it enough times, they will be able, geadually, to join in the singing. If they possess the song book and are encouraged to sing, the method will be quick enough, while remaining simple ; the singers only need to persevere a little. In this learning phase, changing the kyriale is not advisable, and the same one should be sung each Sunday, until the parishioners know it fairly well. Such an undertaking should therefore not be started shortly before Advent or Lent. To make learning easier, one will find the CDs of the series “l’année liturgique in Gregorian chant” useful. All kyriales and Credos are included. |
