5th Sunday after Pentecost PDF Print E-mail

Summary of comments of this office by Dom Schuster, in his work L'année liturgique.

The versicle of the Introït is taken from Psalm 26, as is that of the preceding Sunday. "Hear, O Lord, my voice with which I have cried to Thee: be Thou my helper, forsake me not, nor do Thou despise me, O God my Savior."

The Gradual respond, taken from Psalm 83, is the same as for that of the first Monday of Lent: "Behold, O God our protector, and look on Thy servants."

The versicle of the Alleluia is taken from Psalm 20: "In Thy strength, O Lord, the king shall joy; and in Thy salvation he shall rejoice exceedingly."

The versicle for the antiphon of the Offertory (Psalm 15) is identical to the one of the Monday after the Second Sunday of Lent. All the chants of the Masses after Pentecost, in the Gregorian manuscripts, have this quality of lacking a single dominant theme; they have been gathered together as a sort of cento: "I will bless the Lord, who hath given me understanding; I set God always in my sight; for He is at my right hand, that I be not moved."

The antiphon for the Communion is taken from Psalm 26, and describes the sentiments of the faithful soul inundated with joy by the possession of God.
