In 1766, Wagner, the musical director of the castle of Eisenstadt, passed away, and his assistant, Haydn, took his place. Since he had no competitors, he started working on several important religious works., the first of which was the « Missa Cellensis in the honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary » also known as the Ste Cecilia Mass, the longest mass of this first period. In 1767 follows the Stabat Mater in G minor, which, was one of his first works to give him an international reputation around 1780, especially in Paris. The Ste Cecilia Mass was used in Eisenstadt and Esterhaza for princely parties, which included atending a festive mass. At a time when music was used by the Establishment, much like architecture, Haydn just had to create a brilliant music. On listening, one imagines the effect on a whole princely court attending a high mass in which the music emphasizes the sacred text that proclaims the greatness of God and the smallness of man, a mass that perfectly reflects the Christian spirit prevailing at that time in Vienna, the Catholic throne that the anticlericals hated so much.
